JAIIB and CAIIB practice: do the banking, not just the reading.

JAIIB and CAIIB are the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF) examinations that many bank staff take as they build a banking career; CAIIB is taken after JAIIB. Both expect you to apply concepts to numbers and short cases, not only recall definitions. The surest way to get there is to practise the calculations and decisions until they feel routine.

What the papers test

JAIIB’s papers cover the Indian economy and financial system, the principles and practices of banking, accounting and financial management for bankers, and retail banking and wealth management. CAIIB goes deeper into bank management, bank financial management (treasury, risk, ALM and capital), business finance and banking law, plus an elective. Always check the current syllabus and pattern on IIBF’s own website: it is the only official source.

Where candidates lose marks

  • Numericals done by formula, without the idea behind them, such as yield, duration, forward rates, DSCR, gap and LCR. A small change in the question then breaks the method.
  • Classification rules half-remembered, such as when a loan becomes an NPA or how an account is categorised for KYC risk.
  • Case questions answered in the abstract. A case asks what the officer should do next, in order.

How TrezCap helps you practise

TrezCap is a practice platform built around FinTreasury Bank, a virtual bank. Choose JAIIB or CAIIB as your goal and TrezCap shows your syllabus map, how much of it TrezCap teaches and practises, and where to start. You then work the topic: a short lesson, a quiz, and a scored simulation where you take the officer’s decision and see the consequence. Where TrezCap does not cover a syllabus line yet, the map says so.

QuestionWorkingAnswer
A bond with a 7.10% coupon trades at 98.50 per 100 face value. What is its current yield?7.10 ÷ 98.50 × 1007.21%
A term loan’s instalment has been overdue for 75 days. How is the account classified?Overdue up to 30 days is SMA-0, more than 30 and up to 60 days SMA-1, more than 60 and up to 90 days SMA-2SMA-2, a special mention account
If nothing is paid, when does it become an NPA?An account becomes an NPA when interest or an instalment stays overdue for more than 90 daysOnce the overdue passes 90 days

The current yield ignores the gain from buying below face value; the yield to maturity includes it, which is why a candidate needs both. For NPA and SMA questions, count the overdue days carefully and check which side of each boundary the account falls.

Key terms

  • IIBF: The Indian Institute of Banking and Finance, which conducts JAIIB and CAIIB.
  • NPA: A non-performing asset: a loan whose interest or instalment is overdue for more than 90 days.
  • SMA: Special mention account: an early-warning category before an account becomes an NPA.
  • Current yield: Annual coupon divided by the bond’s price.
  • DSCR: Debt service coverage ratio: cash available to service debt divided by the debt service due.

Is TrezCap official JAIIB or CAIIB study material?

No. TrezCap is independent practice and is not affiliated with or endorsed by IIBF. Use it alongside your official study material, not instead of it. It gives no exam credit.

Which JAIIB and CAIIB topics can I practise in TrezCap?
